Aquaculture

Project name: “Barnacles”

Start date: 2011

Conclusion date: 2013

Partners: IMAR/DOP-UAç; Fisheries Regional Sub secretary Office

Description: Project supported by SRAM through the Fisheries Regional Sub secretary Office, under the law 47/2010, has these main goals: to implement a small experimental unit on land that allows the development of a M. azoricus’ larval farm preliminary protocol and pre-fattening; test and evaluate economical and technical viability of certain materials as settlement substrate, as well as the M. azoricus settlement and harvest effect; study the M. azoricus natural recruitment inter-annual variation, through an experimental system placed near a wild population; create a genetic profile of several M. azoricus colonies around Faial island, in order to understand its population structure.

Project name: “MEGATEC – technological development and spots’ analysis for Megabalanus azoricus

Start date: 2011

Conclusion date: 2013

Partners: DOP-UAç (University of Azores Department of Oceanography and Fisheries)

Description: This Project is the sequel of PEPCA I, in which the goal is to test new barnacles’ (Megabalanus azoricus) offshore production technologies, mainly production structures, settlement substrates and harvest technologies, as well as finding the best spots for future production units installation.

Project name: “Development of the commercial potential of the sea urchins Sphaerechinus granularis and Paracentrotus lividus species”

Start date: August 2009

Conclusion date: April 2011

Partners: DOP-UAç (University of Azores Department of Oceanography and Fisheries), Gourmet marine Ltd, Canary Institute of Marine Sciences, Regional Directorate for Science, Technology and Communications of Azores

Description: Project supported under the PRICE program, which goals were, through several sampling methods, to know 2 Azorean Echinoidea natural stocks’ exploit potential and in which way it’s possible to sustainably explore the resources, respecting the marine resources exploit main community rules.

Project name:  “Two sea urchin species (Sphaerechinus granularis and Paracentrotus lividus) commercial potential evaluation in Faial island – Azores”

Start date: August 2008

Conclusion date: July 2009

Partners: DOP-UAç (University of Azores Department of Oceanography and Fisheries), Regional Directorate for the Support of Investment and Competitiveness

Description: Project supported under the Empreende Jovem program, which integrated a graduated technician to study the economic and technical viability in the exploit of two Azorean sea urchin species through its populations’ assessment (spatial location, density by size classes, accessibility); determination of the gonad quality (IGS, color, granularity, texture and firmness); analysis of the species main markets and knowledge about the best aquaculture/fishing methods that promote sustainably the value and management of a final product.

Project name: “Experimental project of barnacles’ production in Aquaculture – I”

Start date: January 2008

Conclusion date: October 2009

Partners: DOP-UAç (University of Azores Department of Oceanography and Fisheries), Regional Directorate for Fisheries, Los Lagos University (Chile)

Description: This Project represented the Azores aquaculture startup, with the M. azoricus exploit economic and technical viability study through the conception, construction and consequent monitoring of a Settlement Artificial Structure and, at a biological level, the study of the conspecifics influence in the M. azoricus’ settlement and development as well as the influence of the structure surface texture in the larval settlement.

Project name: “Aquaculture in Azores – An economical and biological analysis of the Aquaculture fishery production viability in the Azores”

Start date: January 2007

Conclusion date: June 2007

Partners: Regional Directorate for Support to the Economic Cohesion of the Azores

Description: Project supported under the Empreende Jovem program, which main goals were: identification of native species with potential for aquaculture production, study of the best production technics/systems to apply in the Azorean reality and characterize the European market for these products in order to know how the Azorean products can be competitive inside it.
